Strawberries...

On Wednesday morning we went strawberry picking... I think picking berries is one of my favorite things to do every summer. We went to a new patch in town...and the berries were amazing...lots and lots of them, very red and juicy...
Elsie brought along her little tin bucket for picking berries...however she preferred to pick the white berries...and she would not eat a single berry the whole time!
I picked a handful of berries and put in her little bucket...she was very happy to have a heaping bucket of berries...however she promptly dumped her bucket out on the ground...so I got to pick her berries 2 times for her!
She looks like Strawberry Shortcake with a bucket of berries and her floppy hat!
Auntie Marissa and Emma were good little strawberry pickers...and when they were done picking they were very good little babysitters for Elsie...
My Mom took most of the pictures...and I love this one...Marissa, Elsie and Emma wearing mud boots...the very best thing for picking berries...
We had 11 pickers (including Elsie) and we all picked about 136lbs of berries...all in under 2 hours! My Mom picked about 8 buckets, Grandma B. picked 2, Jessica picked 2, I picked 3...that is a lot of berries...
I love this picture...the patch was by far the nicest we have ever been to...and it was not over-run with people like the one last year...it was perfect...
I brought my berries over to my parents house so I would have helpers to watch Elsie and help me with the berries...I sure am glad my family never tires of Elsie and I! Laura, Lisa and Colter cut the stems off all the berries...quite a job! Colter loves to pick berries and cut the stems off...what a guy!
This picture tells perfectly why I prefer to do all food processing and preserving at my parents house...Just look at all the helpers...it makes a big job go so much faster...and the good thing is they all enjoy helping...in our family we have always made "work" like this into fun!
My Mom and I each froze lots of berries to use in smoothies and as special "middle-of-winter" treats...and we also crushed lots of berries to make into jam...my parents bought a new Roma Grinder thing from the Lemans catalog...after we finally figured out how to use...it made crushing berries so much faster! Last year we spent all afternoon crushing berries by hand with a potato masher...but this went so fast that it took about half an hour to do several buckets!
Now I can't wait for blueberries, peaches, pears, peas, carrots...it is a good feeling to know you are feeding your family fresh and healthy food!

it really was fun!! and it's so neat that so many of us could go together - and everyone helped one another get their buckets filled. (and elsie was lucky to have both her grammas there together!!) that really was the best patch we've been to - word will get around and next year they'll have a ton of business, i bet!
